A-C baseball team wins 10u Athens tournament played July 12-14

The A-C Central Knights captured the Athens 10u Baseball Tournament championship over the July 12-14 weekend.
The Knights went undefeated winning over Williamsville, Athens and PORTA enroute to their way to the championship.
The young Knights were coached by Colin Arthalony.

Beardstown Jr. Girls forced to fight out of loser’s bracket

After dropping their first game Saturday in the Jr. Little League League state tournament to LaGrange by 17-8 verdict, the hometowners fought back to win a real slugfest with LaSalle in a 16-15  contest in extra innings.
The young Lady Tigers took on Evergreen Park in the loser’s bracket in a 6 p.m. contest Monday evening to attempt to earn a shot at the state title by coming out of the loser’s bracket.

Big League All-Stars finish third in Regional Tournament at 2-2

The Beardstown Big League Girls All-Stars got out of the gate with a quick jump start by winning the first two games in the Regional Tournament hosted by Illinois District 13 at Elgin.
The tournament features a Pool Play bracket with four games, with the two teams having the best records moving on to play for the Regional Championships, with the winner advancing to the LL World Series.
Beardstown won their first two games in Pool Play, before losing to Indiana in a hard fought 9-7 loss. Earlier in Pool Play the hometowners took on Elgin winning their first game in Pool Play by a 14-4 margin. This followed with a 10-0 shutout over Iowa, giving Beardstown a 2-0 record in the early going.

Calendar of Events

Aug. 1
Area residents will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at a Dept. of Natural Resources hunter safety course. The course is scheduled for Friday, August 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, August 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Beardstown Golden Age Center.

Free Movie in the Park at dusk on Friday, August 1 at Jennie Marr Dunaway Memorial Park in Virginia. The movie, “42” (legend of Jackie Robinson) will be shown. Bring your blankets and chairs and the whole family.

Back to School Fair from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for families and students in Beardstown and surrounding communities at First Christian Church, 1421 Beard St., Beardstown.

Sangamon River Audubon is hosting a Hummingbird Festival on Aug. 9, from 8-11 a.m. at the New Salem Visitor Center. The event is open to the public.

Aug. 16
Slaw Dawg’s 50/60s Diner will host their Ninth Annual Cruise-In from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, August 16 at 218 W. South Street in Astoria.
Nine trophies will be given out. No entry fee.
Half of the proceeds will go to Jack Bailey/aka “Santa’s Workshop.”

Robert Henry Huss

Robert Henry Huss, 90, of Urbana, originally of Beardstown, died July 27, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. A private graveside service will be held in Beardstown.
The family will meet friends at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown on Friday, August 1, from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Beardstown Public Library, the American Heart Association, or the Fisher House Foundation.

Rosina M. (McCoy) Sullivan

Rosina M. (McCoy) Sullivan, 89, of St, Augustine, Fla., and formerly of Beardstown, died Sunday, July 13, at Bayview Care Center in St. Augustine. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6,  at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with burial to follow at Beardstown City Cemetery. Thomas Burget, 82 of Beardstown, died Thursday, July 24 at his home. The family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown. There will be no services or burial. Memorials have been suggested to American Cancer Society.
